Office crashing + won't reinstall

Please Help!!!

My word 2004 started refusing to open= "application has quit unexpectedly" When all else failed, I tried to run the "remove office" it failed, so i manually deleted it. I repaired permissions, i even tried setting up a new account on myhard drive.

installing off my Word disc, gave me the same error message= app quit. tried using the "remove office" from the install disc=same error.

the setup assistant from the disc gives me this report for apple:

That looks like a missing update.

Since you dragged Office to the trash, you also dragged all the updates to
the trash.

Office 2004 can't run on OS 10.5 without its updates.

Go to the Microsoft site and download update 11.3.5 and run it. Then run
Microsoft Software Update from Help>Check for Updates in any application,
and allow it to suck in the rest of them.

Once you have installed 11.3.11, then see how you go.

Oh. Damn! We might have got lucky...

OK, put in your Office CD, look in the Additional Tools folder and run the
Remove Office tool. Run it twice, to make sure you got the whole thing out.

Then re-install, and run the updates before you run any of the applications.

I know what mzungu will answer : it doesn't work cose the remove tool crash too !
I have the same problem since today ... nothing want to work, all the office app crash : word, excel, update app, remove app ...

And I try to find to what is the problem ....

You're right- the remove office tool did not work either from the hard drive or from the disc. Same crash message.
I had no luck with any answers from any forums.
I computer programmer friend advised me to give up on office and use Neo Office instead. (a free ware app) I tried it and it was a pain--for me, I'm sure someone else might love it.

I took the laptop into Apple--which, in nyc is always a 3-4 hr event with a reservation!--
The "genius" tried to click it open from the disc, which of course produced the error message. She tried the disc in her computer and it worked. She tried to repair my disc permissions-- as I had already done. She tried to drag and drop instead of using the install--all as I had done.

Eventually she said had written over my system. wow. She claimed i might have gotten a "beta virus." I asked what that is and she said it's like a virus. mmmkkk.

She used her tools to do a archive/install of my system. She said I could leave it with them and come back another day and it would cost $89 or she could do it right their at the genius bar, but it would take a couple hours. Luckily I had the day off from work! I had to dump 20gigs of material of my laptop to make room for the archive, but other than that it was painless.

After we reinstalled Leopard, I was able to install office of the disc.

A day or two ago my system did yet another autoupdate --have been doing a lot to catch up from the disc. But this one was new and looked like it might be to address exactly this issue. I hope so, don't want to go through this again.

I have the solution : the re installation of combo 10.5.2

Il the system build is corrupt (upgrade) by the last aiport update, change it with terminal as shown on Apple support forum (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6901687#6901687) BUT TAKE CARE, if you change it, you'll need an other mac to reinstall combo by target mode (because change the build version make os X walk strangly ... dmg can't be open, terminal don't want to work ...).

That's an excellent tip. And less work that the process Mzungu had to go
through.

Now we know the 10.5.2 combo update fixes it, we can suggest that as a
response.

The Apple expert in NYC is a little confused, I think :) There's no such
thing as a "beta" virus :) All the viruses I have seen, such as the one
that is currently sweeping China, are fully tested when they are released
:)

What she may have been referring to is that people who had beta versions of
either Office 2008 or Apple 10.5.2 on their computer had to do certain
things to restore the system before installing the released software.

But such people would be members of the respective beta groups, and would
already have been advised what to do.
