Office documents slow to open

M

Mattps

XP Professional x64 SP2 Office 2007 Professional

When opening Office documents (double clicking on the document) it
takes several minutes for the parent application (Excel or Word) to
open. It then takes several more minutes for the document to open. No
error messages are displayed.

This only happens when opening documents across the network. It makes
no difference if the antivirus package (McAfee VSE) is running or
not.

M

Mattps

This only really happens for x64 users. 32 bit users are not affected.
Opening the file from the local drive has no affect on performace.

M

Mattps

I have done some further testing. It appears that when documents are copied
to the local disk and double clicked, they DO open straight away - must have
missed a trick here.
I copied the dame document back to the network drive and tried to open it -
3 minutes + before it opened.

Hello Matt,

Since the issue only occurred on the files stored on the network, I would
like to know if you have checked this article:

An Office program is slow or may appear to stop responding (hang) when you
open a file from a network location
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833041

Also, we can place a txt file on the network location and try to open with
your 64bit client, what is the result?

In addition, please let us know if the issue occurred when you first open
Office applications on the client and then open the file on the network via
File > Open?

If we encounter the same issue, please run Word safe mode to narrow down
the problem.

Click start, click run, type "winword /a", please open the file on the
network, what is the result?

If there is any update, feel free to post back.
