Office documents won't open from windows explorer

When I try to open any Word or Excel document from the Windows Explorer, the
application launches, but instead of the file opening, I get the following
error: "There was a problem sending the command to the program."

The files open OK if I first launch the program, then open them using the
File>Open command from within the application.

Any ideas?
