Office Enterprise 2007 - can't open, fix, or remove

U

Unga Bunga

I cannot open any Office Enterprise 2007 products. They had been working for
about six months, and now when I open any of the products I get a "There is
not enough RAM to open program" program being whatever Office product I try
to open. This all happened after I upgraded my RAM.

I thought that the RAM would be the problem. So I reverted my RAM and the
Office products still won't open. I ran Office Diagnosis on it and it says
that there's a problem but it doesn't know what it is. I tried to "Change"
the settings via Control Panel>>Add/Remove Software, and it said that the
files are corrupted and I need to setup the program with the Install CD. I
tried that and when I start to install the software, it stops and says that
there's an unexpected error and setup is cancelled.

I tried to "Remove" the software via Control Panel>>Add/Remove Software, and
the same thing happened. I tried to delete all the files and Groove.dll
won't let me.

I then downloaded the service pack 1, and it wouldn't install it on my
machine and says "Cannot find that program on this system" or something like
that.

I've toured the help files all over Microsoft.com (what a mess) and decided
to pass on paying $100+ for contacting Microsoft about the problem and now I
am at your mercy. Can anyone help me?

I got the product through my company and it is legit. I ran virus scans and
spyware scans and no dice. If there is any other information you need, let
me know - thanks!

Did you replace existing RAM sticks or add to them?

Specifically what does the error message say? Don't paraphrase it -
terminology can make the world of difference.

U

Unga Bunga

I originally had 4 sticks of 256k RAM. I replaced two of them with 1g RAM
for a total of 2.5g of RAM. When I switched it back, the same crap happened.
I am currently back to the 2.5g of RAM.

Here's the rundown of what happens when I try to open Excel:

I get a window that says:
"Excel failed to start correctly last time. Starting Excel in safe mode
will help you correct or isolate a startup problem in order to successfully
start the program. Some functionality may be disabled in this mode.

Do you want to start Excel in safe mode?"

When I choose yes, I get this message:
"Excel failed to launch in safe mode. Do you want to start Detect and
Repair?"

When I choose yes a Windows Installer window pops up (I have the Setup CD in
the drive), "Preparing to install..."

Then, that window closes after about 20 seconds and a new window pops up
with the alert symbol and says:
"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you
are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not
correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."

My Windows is not in safe mode.

I can't help but think that the timing with the RAM swap was coincidental -
but I can certainly be wrong about that.

Reading the message you get says nothing about having enough RAM. Since
you're not running in Windows Safe Mode, that leaves an incorrect Windows
Installer.

Hopefully someone else will chime in at this point but if not, try this

Thanks JoAnn. I went to the link and updated my Windows Installer. The
installation worked, but unfortunately Excel is still getting the errors. I
retried other things and tracked the error messages. They are as follows:

When I try to "Install Now" from the CD-ROM:
"Installing Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007..."
About one minute later:
"Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 encountered an error during setup."
And my only option is:
"Close"

When I try to change or remove Office in "Add or Remove Programs":
"This product installation has been corrupted. Run setup again from the CD,
DVD, or other original installation source."

When I try to manually delete the Microsoft Office folder:
"Cannot delete GrooveIntlResource.dll: Access is denied.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not
currently in use."

Perhaps my only avenue is to reformat my drive? I have a hard time
believing that it's my only solution. However, as it stands I can't use or
uninstall the software...

I am getting a RAM message. I thought I had typed it, but I must have
deleted it (a little embarassing), anyway I get this message if I say no to
running Excel in safe mode:

"Not enough memory to run Microsoft Office Excel. Please close other
applications and try again."

It would seem that my new RAM is bad, or something, but I get the same
message when I revert back to the old RAM configuration.

No. I tried it again to double check my transposostions, and it states
exactly as I typed it. I was hoping I missed something, because it sounded
like you had a lead.

New developments: When I try to open iTunes, it has the Windows Installer
error that I get when I try to open an Office program, and my PC has
restarted on me twice for no reason and without warning. Is it possible that
the RAM is too powerful for my computer (and thus overheating it - can that
happen?) or it was infected with some sort of virus? I'm in the process of
scanning my computer again...

Also, I've tried to troubleshoot Windows Installer as described at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315346/en-us
I went through all the steps, but things are the same.

It sounds like you have all kinds of stuff going on now.

Can your motherboard support the amount of RAM you tried to install? Does
your system recognize all of it? If you're using mixed brands, I've heard
that some computers will have issues.

If it was my system, I'd be tempted to take the new RAM out, put the old RAM
back in, run a System Restore to a date prior to the start of the problems
and see if that helped. If not, I'd gather all of my disks, product keys,
backup my files, flatten the system, and start with a refresh install of
everything.

"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can
occur
if
you

correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for
assistance."

My Windows is not in safe mode.

:

Did you replace existing RAM sticks or add to them?

Specifically what does the error message say? Don't paraphrase it -
terminology can make the world of difference.

message
I cannot open any Office Enterprise 2007 products. They had been
working
for
about six months, and now when I open any of the products I get a
"There
is
not enough RAM to open program" program being whatever Office
product
I
try
to open. This all happened after I upgraded my RAM.

I thought that the RAM would be the problem. So I reverted my
RAM
and
the
Office products still won't open. I ran Office Diagnosis on it
and
it
says
that there's a problem but it doesn't know what it is. I tried
to
"Change"
the settings via Control Panel>>Add/Remove Software, and it said
that
the
files are corrupted and I need to setup the program with the
Install
CD.
I
tried that and when I start to install the software, it stops and
says
that
there's an unexpected error and setup is cancelled.

I tried to "Remove" the software via Control Panel>>Add/Remove
Software,
and
the same thing happened. I tried to delete all the files and
Groove.dll
won't let me.

I then downloaded the service pack 1, and it wouldn't install it
on
my
machine and says "Cannot find that program on this system" or
something
like
that.

I've toured the help files all over Microsoft.com (what a mess)
and
decided
to pass on paying $100+ for contacting Microsoft about the
problem
and
now
I
am at your mercy. Can anyone help me?

I got the product through my company and it is legit. I ran
virus
scans
and
spyware scans and no dice. If there is any other information you
need,
let
me know - thanks!

Probably quicker than anything else. For sure, it's surer.

Thanks JoAnn and P. I'm just going to reformat the whole thing and go from

It's not something I enjoy doing and I don't usually recommend it but when
multiple or cascading problems start happening, sometimes its the less
painful task.

Good news. I did a system restore to four days ago (a time before the RAM
was installed) and it worked. Everything works and the new RAM is still in.
I'll monitor the system closely just in case something goes awry.

Thanks for all your help!!!

Unga Bunga,
Curious if your system is still ok?
I have had very similar symptoms with a laptop running Office
Enterprise 2007 on XP since July 5th (might have been earlier, but I
actually observed the holiday). Unlike you, I did not recently modify
any RAM config
or anything else - just suddenly all my Office apps (ppt, excel, word)
stopped working with different
symptoms:
ppt - shows about box and then silently dies
excel - "Not enough memory to run Excel. Please close other apps and
start again".
word - dies, tries to re-open the file in safe mode, displays the
file, and then dies.

I've re-installed Office, and Word seems to load OK now.
I've tried to update XP, and msiexec dies.
As far as I can tell, other apps seem uneffected.

Given the similarities of our original symptoms, and the near same
timing, I'm wondering if there
isn't some license issue, or worse, some virus.
So, while I hope your system continues to work, I thought I'd register
my status in the event others are experiencing a similar
pattern...especially if anyone has a solution!

what if you have vista? because i get a setup error msg saying i need the
files and i need the disk or download location. i managed to delete that

I originally had 4 sticks of 256k RAM. I replaced two of them with 1g RAM
for a total of 2.5g of RAM. When I switched it back, the same crap
happened.
I am currently back to the 2.5g of RAM.

Here's the rundown of what happens when I try to open Excel:

I get a window that says:
"Excel failed to start correctly last time. Starting Excel in safe mode
will help you correct or isolate a startup problem in order to
successfully
start the program. Some functionality may be disabled in this mode.

Do you want to start Excel in safe mode?"

When I choose yes, I get this message:
"Excel failed to launch in safe mode. Do you want to start Detect and
Repair?"

When I choose yes a Windows Installer window pops up (I have the Setup CD
in
the drive), "Preparing to install..."

Then, that window closes after about 20 seconds and a new window pops up
with the alert symbol and says:
"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if
you
are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not
correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."

My Windows is not in safe mode.

Office Enterprise is not available to the Public but can be purchased through a Companies Home Program.

I suggest that you get in contact with the IT person at the company from where you purchased it or if you procured it by any unauthorized means then the only thing that you can do is to reformat your system to get rid of it
