Office Enterprise 2007 Installation

Product installed but every program opens with the installer, followed by
the configuration screen and config activity. Program finally comes up, but
I've wasted two to three minutes waiting. Tried the repair program, to no
effect. Running Vista Home Premium, all current updates to Vista and to
Office 2007. Any suggestions as to a correction?

I should add that I can cancel out of the setup/config process and the
program will run. I also get a cryptic "stdole.tbl" message with Excel with
the splash page.

Hi Bill:

I feel your pain, unfortunately. In accounts lacking Administrator permissions, Office 2007 programs re-install every time you open them. Many solutions have been proposed for this problem, and some of them work for some people, but there is no solution that works for everyone. In my case, I have yet to come across a solution that works. In accounts lacking Administrator permissions I use Open Office.

Office 2007 does work in Administrator accounts, but not without annoyances that you learn to live with. For example, certain components reinstall themselves even after you remove them, like French and Spanish proofing tools, and Sharepoint services.

There is a work-around to the problem of re-installing, but I must caution you that I have not fully tested it. I do not have Vista, but I can explain in terms of Windows XP. If you rename this file:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE12\Office Setup Controller\SETUP.EXE

to SETUP.EX_

your Office programs will open without reinstalling and they will work just fine. You may have to rename the file (back to SETUP.EXE) if you need to add or remove Office components, repair your installation, or install updates from Microsoft Update.

I would advise anyone offered Office 2007 Enterprise under the Home Use Program to think twice. It's tempting to pay only 20 bucks for Office, but you pay in other ways as well.

Interesting observation but I have Office Enterprise installed on a test
machine under a normal user account and have had none of the problems that
you enumerate, nor any of the others that appear in the news groups.

Hi Milly:

Was Office Enterprise 2007 a clean install on your test machine, or did you have a previous version of Office - either upgraded or previously removed - on the computer? I can only speak to the commonalities I have observed by searching the web. In my research, users with a clean install of Windows and Office Enterprise 2007 reported that this setup solved the problem of continual re-installation.

If there is someone out there who actually knows what's going on, they're not saying. Or, to give the benefit of the doubt, it may be that the problem is not well understood, which is why some solutions work for some people but there is no solution that works for all (or most.)

I have nothing against Microsoft personally, although I feel they may have been mistaken in offering to home users a product designed for enterprises. Enterprises have different client management priorities.

What is apparent is that Office Enterprise 2007 searches for /something/ every time it is invoked -- possibly a multilanguage user interface (MUI) -- and attempts to install what it feels is missing...which would be reasonable when managing a large installed base. The workaround I posted earlier prevents the installation routine from starting.

I may be a bit slow, but how do you get to the the file name to change it? If
I find it through windows explorer it does not give me the .exe part to
change.

Tried your tip - had to change the view properties to see the .exe - and
have another interesting event: I rename the file and another copy shows up,
in the same folder. Some how the file is replicated - I now have the exe
version and four modified versions. It seems bound and determined to to
maintain that file.

Latest, I uninstalled the entire Office and reinstalled from the CD
directory, running the setup file as Administrator. Same problem.
