Office failing

My wife's Macbook Pro suddenly stopped running Office (documents don't
open, and applications do not start). I have resinstalled the latest
10.4.10 combo, updated prebinding, checked permissions (and before
that run DiskDoctor). No dice. I get the same symptoms as others have
described: Office Setup Assistant bounces a few times then goes away.
Trying to run Remove Office from the CD gets one bounce. I have
manually removed all office files I could find, but I would not be
surprised if something is hidden elsewhere. Anyway, I am stumped. Any
ideas would be most appreciated (but they have to be NEW ideas...).
I guess there is always archive and reinstall, but I would much rather
not. However, I will listen if told that this is the only way out.

Er thanks. I have been telling everyone to do exactly what you did.
I'm outta ideas other than the thing you dread.

It would be *very* useful to know why yours is so hard to fix.
Is there anything interesting in her
~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Microsoft Word.crash as displayed by
Console.app? Each report tends to be enormous, with the beginning
containing the date and all just after a row of asterisks.

Is she set up as an Admin or User? Have you tried creating a new user
account & seeing if you can install there? It might be worth a shot before
an archive & install.

Set up as admin. I did add a new user, but can't install from the new
user either. Sigh. I guess it is archive and reinstall.

Just be sure to check Preserve Users and Network Settings when you select
Archive & Install.
