Office files are very slow to open.

I have 4 laptops all running Windows XP Pro SP1 and Office XP Standard SP3.
Whenever the laptops are joined to my domain they are very slow to open .doc
and .xls files. If disconnected the local files, open just fine. When I am
connected, I can open Word or Excel first and then go to file,open, and the
documents will open just fine. It is only whne I try to open the file
directly without having the app open first that I have a problem. What can
possible cause this and how can I fix it? Any and all help will be greatly
appreciated.
