Office files

Went to open some Office documents I had not viewed recently. Suddenly they
have 4 digit file extensions (docx, xlsx, etc.). What's with the 'x' at the
end of the extension, and how did it get that way? These are important
files, and I kinda need them. What happened?

Evidently, you've installed Office 2007 and have converted the files to the new format.
