Office for Mac 2004 updates

D

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: intel

My son hasn't updated his Office for Mac 2004 in a very long time. To give you an idea, when he clicks the "help" menu "Check for Updates" doesn't show up, but "Downloads and Updates" does. That brings him to an update that he can't load.

Questions:
1. Are there a series of updates that he needs to install to bring him up to date or is the one update that will do that? Where would these updates be?

2. The original problem he's been having is when he goes to print, only the first page prints. A friend also had this problem on a pc.

Has he tried the updating lately? The most current update for 2004 (Office
11.x) is 11.5.0 which is a combo update which should be usable even if his
current level is 11.0 - But the problem he may be running into is that his
version of AutoUpdate is out of date. He may need to update that first. Have
him try going the direct route from the Mactopia web site:

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your help. I have Office 2004 and thought my son did also. Sounds like he has the previous version Office X. He's decided to just upgrade to 2008 (smart move as far as I'm concerned).

BTW, we had our first .docx file sent to us and, thankfully, I recently read about the converter for 2004. Worked well. Do you know if 2008 needs the converter or is it built in?

Hope your 4th was a happy one,

Diane

Hi Diane -

The default format for Word 2008 *is* .docx - all the Office 2008 use the
same new OOXML file format used by Office 2007 on the PC. Also, Office 2008
can use the earlier (.doc, etc.) formats as well.

The holiday was great - hope yours was also:)

has MS come out with the 2004 converter that is not in Beta. (now That
2008 has been out on the market several months . I know the beta version
does not recognize the difference between 2004 and 2008 and will damage
you 2008 install if you attempt to run it on 2004 if you have both on
same Drive and the installer does not work on OSX3.9. I I know 3.9 is
old but on my desktop I have no choice. I've tried upgrading to 10.4, 7
times and 7 times it goes to a Grey screen with the winder and will stay
that way for 2 days or more (probably longer, if you were to let it.
I've had to revert to 3.9 every time. I finally gave up. I have
installed on a Firewire Drive attached to the G4-500 so it not that it
isn't capable. its just something isn't right on the current drive I
have installed on to allow it to upgrade.

Hi Phillip:

Did you check on Mactopia?

If you had, you could have saved yourself (and us...) an enormous rant...
:)

Phillip, we have had this discussion before: remember we agreed that if you
want to kick Microsoft, you have to kick the right spot, otherwise they just
giggle.

Let us know if you are having difficulty finding good spots to kick: we'll
be glad to send you a list :)

Cheers

Hi Phillip:

Sorry, there is a new law just released prohibiting physical violence in the
newsgroup. So we must not talk about nutz or the application of footwear
thereto :)

And you won't get banned until your spelling is worse than mine, so you have
a generous safety margin :)

Cheers
