Office for Mac 2004 v Office 2007

I am starting to get files from Windows Microsoft Office 2007 and
cannot open them with my Office for Mac 2004. There is a patch on the
microsoft web to allow Windows office to read the file but I can find
nothing for Mac. Any ideas?
