Office For Mac Not Opening

T

tom

I'm working with a G5 iMac that I've had for a couple of years now. It
has had MS Office 2004 on it from day one and has worked just fine. I
use it for biz and personal work and have created many Office
documents / projects that are personally vital.

For some reason none of the Office applications will open now. This
began out of the blue and is a big problem. I've tried opening
existing documents, clicking on the desktop icons for Word, Excel and
Power Point and clicking on the Word and Excel listings in the
Applications folder on my HD all with the same result - the
application begins to open and then stops. Simply does not complete
the process of opening.

All help / suggestions much appreciated.

Hi Tom -

Although it may seem to be the case, not much happens "out of the blue":)
There's usually a specific cause for the behavior - it's just sometimes more
obvious than others.

Most likely you hae recently updated Office or OS X (new Security Update,
perhaps?) or installed new software that works in a somewhat different way
than you might think. Have a look at the 1st item on this page [Unexpected
Quit on Startup] & see if the procedures there resolve the issue:

If not, post back with specifics re your results.

Bob,

Thanks for the suggestions - I've been gone the past couple of days
and thus unable to get back on this issue sooner. I attempted most of
what was available on the http://word.mvps.org/mac/Diagnose.html site.
Did not get into the heavier suggestions as the warnings concerning
loss of saved work took me to a very uncomfortable place. I'd prefer
to be walked through such details by an expert.

At any rate none of what I did accomplish solved the problem. I re-set
the permissions and checked my computer for problems with Disk First
Aid and the Hardware Test disk that came with the computer.

FYI this computer has required several repairs for a persistent
inadvertent shut down problem since it was new. The main logic board
and power supply have each been replaced twice now (one more serious
incident prior to Sep 07 and I'm supposed to receive a new computer
from Apple free of charge). I'm wondering if all of the sudden shut
downs may have caused Office / Mac to be somehow negatively affected
and is the reason I'm having launch problems? Apparently - I'm not
completely certain of this - the Hard Drive is not damaged.

Additional help / input appreciated.

Tom

Hi Tom -

No question about the history of your Mac possibly being contributory if not
causative. I'd still suggest you follow Diane's suggestion in her reply to
your first post - get the PPC 10.4.9 Combo Update from the Apple site &
apply it even if you've done so previously. Then run Disk Utility - Repair
Disk Permissions.

If that doesn't correct the problem post back with what, specifically, you
have tried... "most of what was available" leave a lot of questions open :)
