Office for Mac opens at startup

I am using Office for Mac 2004 (latest updates installed). When I
startup my computer MS Word automatically opens. I cannot find a way
to stop this action. I have looked at the preferences, I have looked
in the startup folders in the Office Folder. Nothing seems to help.
Can anyone forward a solution so I can start my computer without Word
booting up?

thanks. . .

Try deleting Word from your login items (System
Preferences/Accounts/Login Items).

JE, thanks for the advise. Worked like a charm! I am a longtime Mac
user and had never explored "login items". I sincerely appreciate
your help.
