Office for Mac

A boss of mine has a son with an iBook. He wants to use Office but didn't
know the best way to do it. I told him instead of getting a pc, that he
could get Office for Mac. Now, his iBook is a 2002, don't know what OS it
is. I assume I need to know that before I tell him which version of Office
to get, right? If he were to get Office 2004 he would need OS X? The next
one down looks to me like it is Office 2001. Also, does either Office come
with Outlook or is it a Mac version of email? How easy is installation for
any of this?

I have an iBook at home but my husband uses it. Maybe I should use it
myself so I don't ask so many questions.

Thanks.

A 2002 iBook has OS X on it, so he'd do best to get Office 2004 (the newest
version). A student/teacher version is available for $99 to $149 depending.
It allows three licenses.

The next older version is v.X which would work also and could possibly be
obtained on eBay, but 2004 is the one I'd recommend. Office 2001 is much
older and runs in OS 9. This version includes a version of outlook, but it
is old and clunky and requires OS9 or Classic within OS X.

Entourage, the mail/calendar/organizer app that comes with Mac Office can be
configured to connect with an Exchange server.

Installation for any version of Office is a snap. Configuring Entourage for
an Exchange server is trickier and might require a trip back here to the
newsgroups. BUT, do you really need Outlook connectivity or just a good
mail client? Entourage can do either, but is better than Outlook (IMHO) if
just needing a mail client.

Good luck and keep us posted,
_Mark

Thanks. I think he just needs a good email client. I'm not even sure who
is email is through. It could be a good web based one for all I know.

Side note: MacOffice comes with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Entourage. Be
aware that the MS programs Access, Project, Visio, Publisher, and other
elements of Windows Office do not exist for the Mac.

And if it's running OS X it already has Apple's Mail email client software
which may even be preferable to Entourage... current verson beats the ****
out of Outlook :)

Bob,
I recently switched from PC to Mac. In the process I chose to go with
Entourage over Mac's Mail app. I did look at the Mail app, but maybe in my
"newbie" ignorance I missed the major advantages. I'm now fully converted
to Entourage, but I'll look at switching to Mail if you can win me over.
;^)

You can email directly if you like. Thanks.

David:

Mail is a simple and limited mail application, good for POP and IMAP.

Entourage is an Outlook replacement, great for POP, IMAP and Exchange Server
:)

Use Mail if all you want is email. Use Entourage to add Calendars,
appointments, scheduling, tasks, notes, contact management, and projects.

Mail is an email client. Entourage is a Personal Information Manager.

They're different spaces: different requirements.

Just remember: if you are using Entourage, your Microsoft User Data folder
is PRECIOUS. Make sure it gets an invite to your nightly backup!

Cheers

Hi David -

John has pretty well summed it up for you... I wasn't trying to "win you
over", just making sure you were aware of the options. Which you prefer is
totally dependent on your needs & preferences.
