Office Issues with saving

Hello,
I am looking for guidance on how to solve this issue I have with
saving either Excel or Word documents to a network.

SMB connections - slow when saving but copying files is quick
AFP connections - fast saving and fast on copying files

I have run a repair disk and repair permissions

I am on 10.4.11 with 2 GB of memory
Office 2004 version 11.5.4

SMB used to be fast and now it is slow. Any ideas on how to fix
this? Or is there a way to fix this with in Office itself? Any
ideas, willing to try to fix.
