Thank you for the reply.

What if one is buying a second hand "unused" but opened product, is there a
way of checking whether it has been used and the Product Number registered
with Microsoft?

I am not Bob, however, i try answer your q.

Be sure that the license you bought is actually legally transferrable. (Not
OEM copy, or OEM with Hardware). After the required license transfer has
been made, you should be able to activate your Office suite, if not, you may
always choose the phone activatioin method and explain that situatiion to
the operator.
