Office:Mac 2004 crashes when trying to print

Mika Parikka

All Office programs crash when I try to print or save a printout as PDF.
This does not affect any programs other than Office.

I do get the Print dialog after choosing File/Print (or cmd-P). Pressing any
of the (blue) buttons (PDF, Preview, Cancel, Print) makes the current
program to crash. Only Entourage is able to send error report. Excel, Word
and PP just crash.

I am using 1,5GHz PowerBook (early 2005) with MacOSX 10.4.8 and Office 2004
11.2.6 (the update did not show it, so i downloaded it from the web). Menu
language in both is English. My printer is Epson AcuLaser C900 connected via
USB.

Is there any way to fix this otherwise than installing office again. I have
update from v.X, so the install process is looooooooooong.

Hi Mika -

Reinstalling Office is most likely *not* to resolve the problem.

The first steps I would take are to 1) make sure you have the latest printer
driver installed - check the Epson web site, 2) run Disk Utility - Repair
Disk Permissions, then 3) restart the Mac.

Applications software is rarely the cause of such behavior, & this sounds
like a fairly typical situation which can be resolved by the steps above. If
not, take a look at:

Side note--follow CyberTaz's steps, as reinstalling probably won't fix--but
I suspect that you think you would need to install Office X, then install
the Office 2004 upgrade. Actually, if removing and reinstalling ever becomes
necessary, you should be able to use the drag-n-drop Office 2004 installer,
and simply point the setup dialog at the Office X cd in the drive when it
asks for a previous version. That's what everyone else says works.

Before you start reinstalling Office, you need to do is determine where the
problem is located so you can take the appropriate steps to correct the
problem.

Since the problem involves all Office applications, you can probably rule
out database corruption in Entourage.

Check to see if conflict is in User's folder:

In System Preferences: Users:

* Create a new user.
* Log Out/In to new user.
* Test Office applications to see if the problems go away.

If problems disappear then you know it's a conflict or corruption in your
user folder.

If the problem exists in the new User the problem is with your system files
and you need to do an Archive and Install of the OS. Directions on Archive
and Install here.

Hi,

Thanks for advice!

But no help. I installed the newest driver again and fixed the permissions
(there were some to fix). And of course restarted. I changed the fonts, did
a new document, tried another template, printed from Preview (as earlier,
printing from other than Office apps works perfectly), ditched the prefs,
rebooted... No help.

Excel, Word and PPt crash without bug report right after i hit ANY buttons
on print dialog (even Cancel). Entourage is able to send a bug report.

Arrrghhh :(

After an advise in Apple support forum discussions I reinstalled Office.
With no help. So it seems that this crashing is related to printing problems
with MacOSX 10.4.8. However, at least according to support forum, I am the
only one with application (suite) spesific problems. Others claim that they
have crashing problem with all apps.

Cheers,

Mika

Hi everyone and thanks for advice,

After doing everything else (including removing and re-installing Office), I
decided to go back to 10.4.7. After that everything worked smoothly.

During the troubleshooting I found lots of instances where people had had
printing problems after installing 10.4.8 so I suggest that in order to keep
your printers working: Do not install 10.4.8!

Cheers,

Mika
