Office makes Internet connection

I have recently started getting a problem.
When I click on some icons in the MS Office Toolbar my computer tries
to go online.
This happens with Excel and Word (2000) but also with some non-MS
products like with Thumbs.
Having opened Word it then shows the connection pop-up about 6 times
before the standard empty document appears.
Also, sometimes when I am in Windows explorer and do a Ctrl_C/Ctrl_V
to copy a file it also tries to make a connection.

What is the problem .. or where should I be looking?

I have also been vexed by the net-centric behavior of Office apps for the
past several months. Word and Excel 2K sometimes (not always) want to
connect to the internet upon startup. ZoneAlarm reports three attempts each
time.

Even more painful is when copying and pasting from a web page onto an Office
document (Word or Excel). Even if the app didn't want internet connection
at startup, when doing the paste it wants to connect. If I refuse the
connection in ZoneAlarm, the paste eventually happens - 5-15 seconds
later!!!!!. If the internet connection was allowed, the paste takes a
couple seconds. Why isn't it instantaneous, since the data is in the local
clipboard???

This copy/paste problem does not happen when using a browser other than IE.
Copy something from the same web page using Mozilla, paste occurs instantly,
no internet connection involved.


This question seems to be asked at least monthly, and no sufficient answer
has been posted. Eric Lawrence has taken a few stabs at it, but I don't
think his responses solve or explain the problem. ZA shows the connection
attempts targeting my DNS server IP, not the localhost. The connect on
startup happens sometimes, not every time. The copy/paste issue is every
time.

Thoughts, anyone?
