Office Menu items being blocked

I'm using Office 2000 and IE7 under Windows XP Pro. I'm editing a large CSV
file under Word 2000 and after I've been using it for a while I suddenly find
that I can no longer use any of my Word menus - when I mouse over a toolbar
icon or menu item the cursor becomes a combined arrow and a small grey
hatched "button" which prevents me from selecting or clicking the underlying
icon or menu item. I can however access the maximise/minimise/close icons at
the top right of the title bar, so I can close down the file and save by that
means, even though I can't access the Save icon, nor the File|Save or
File|Save As menu items. Relaunching Word doesn't clear the problem - I have
to reboot.
I've also noted that, when this happens, I can no longer open other programs
from the desktop - double clicking operates as if I've right-clicked and
selected Properties! Similarly if I choose a program from the Start Menu.
All my Microsoft and Office Updates are current. I have run the Office
Repair functions from the Control Panel|Install/Remove, but this hasn't
improved things either. I can't find this problem referred to on the web
generally let alone the MS KB.
Any suggestions for correcting this frustrating behaviour would be most
welcome - it's driving me to distraction!
