Office must be able to connect to the Internet to use Reference To

We are behind a proxy firewall that prompts for userid and passwords for
connection
to the internet. The reference tools in Office 2008 do not work without
connection to
the internet. They do not attempt to connect thru the proxy, just give the
error that you are not
connected to the internet. Is there any fix or workaround for this?
