Office not opening, not responding

I cannot open any excel or word doc from any files. (Not responding). Though
I can open them if I go through either word or excel. Help?

Do you mean you get a "Not Responding" error message when Excel or Word
tries to open when you click on a file? Are you sure it is Word or Excel
that is not responding and that they are the program(s) that are trying to
open?

What version Word and Excel are you using? What version created the
files you want to open?

I have a file folder on my desktop that I keep all my files in (word, excel,
powerpoint etc) It has been been working fine, until this week. I have not
changed anything. If I click on a word doc, nothing happens, if I click
again, I get the 'not responding' message. If I open word and go to open file
and click on the same doc, it opens.
Running windows XP
Office 2003

First, wait awhile after the first attempt to open the file, and I mean
minutes. If it finally opens after 1 or 2 minutes, please post back.
Also, you may want to try the Excel files also.

The problem is likely due to DDE. It can be fixed by reinstalling, OR
this workaround.

Go to Control Panel, Folder Options, File Types, scroll down to and
select (DOC for Word files) or XLS (for Excel files), click Advanced,
select Open entry, click the edit Button.
Now uncheck "Use DDE" and then put your cursor in the Application box,
arrow all the way to the right and put in "%1" (include the quote
marks), IF there is /dde remove it. Then OK you way out. Things should
work quickly again.

Bob,

Disaster! I tried the workaround you suggested, and it wiped out al
the contents of my files! The file names were still there, and the
opened quickly, but they were EMPTY! I then tried to undo everything I'
done, and now I can't open anything. Help!!!!!!!!!

I have no idea as to what thread you are answering to. It is best to keep to that thread that was posted originally

That work around won't wipe out your file contents. Something else
happened to your system. Since we have no idea as to what other things
are affecting your PC, you should start a NEW thread and describe what
first happened to your Office installation. Please be aware that there
are virus that will wipe out the contents of Office files.

Bob,

When I look in the path field I see:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\WINWORD.EXE" /n /dde

I tried deleting the /n /dde and adding the "%1" with no luck.
I also tried leaving the /n and adding "%1"

When I try to open a file from a folder I have a long wait before i
opens. If I click again on the file icon or on the open folder windo
word hangs and eventually Windows Explorer crashes and restarts.

Any ideas?
I'm using Office 2007 on Windows XP Pro SP3

Thank you,

G

-Have you run Microsoft Office Diagnostics? If not, start there.-

Yes I did, the diagnostics didn't find any problems

I'm sorry, the original thread is for the Office 2003 Word and Excel. If
the Diagnostics didn't come up with a repair I am not sure what other
item may cause the problem other than perhaps the Anti-Virus software
attempting to scan the file and interrupting the file being opened.
perhaps start your own thread about this problem and list what the
symptoms are as well as Office version, updates that have been applied
and any error messages. Mentioning the A-V you are using may also be
helpful if others are seeing the same symptoms.
