Office not responding to keyboard data

My son is a student and 3 months ago purchased Office XP
Academic edition to run on new computer with Windows XP
home. The product was registed on-line at the time of
purchase. All went well for a while.

Now, when we log onto Office (eg MS Word) can type letters
on keyboard, but they are not recognized by the software,
ie, we cannot write a doc. Same with Excel, and possibly
with parts of IE.

Yet if we open Notepad, can key into this and create doc
in normal way.

We have updated to latest version of Vet anti-virus. Also
have uninstalled Office and re-installed it... but the
problem persists.

Any suggestions or explanation would be appreciated.

Thanks, peter

try updating the drivers (but i doubt that would work if
it works in notepad) or try taking it in to a small local
computer store that is well known for quality services
and repairs... they know everything!! did he download
anything and/or install any programs (no matter what they
do as a program, they might have a virus)

I have seen this problem reported in other newsgroups. I have looked on the
MS Knowledge Database and found nothing. Someone should phone the MS support
at (800) 936-5700 (and pay $35) to get the solution and post it here so we
can propagate the solution to other newsgroups. I cannot do it since I do
not have the problem. Who will volunteer?
