Office not responding when trying to open existing file

Our Network consists of two computers running XP Professional. One has
Office 2003 and the other has Office 2002. We had no problems until recently
when the system with Office 2002 (just after installing service pack 3)
started to hang up and stall when trying to open an Office Document in Excel
or Word. Windows Task Master showed the program twice and took a while to
close the program.
However, if you use the file list to recall an existing file, it will open.
Office just seems to hang when using the Open command in a directory. There
is no error message.
Now this problem appears on both computer systems. To correct it we have
been "restoring".
Norton is not finding any virus or spyware. We are running Norton Internet
Security 2006.

Carey Frisch's answer to a different post would probably be the answer to
this also.

The response from Daniel Blake does not answer the question. I have now
discovered that Service Pack 3 was downloaded after the problem on the first
computer appeared. There has been nothing added to the second computer using
Office 2003 but there seems to be some kind of cross infection?
