Office Picture manager wont open 16bit TIFF just displays red x

Office Picture manager wont open a 16bit B&W TIFF file. It does open 8bit
files and JPEGs. Those B&W images are in the file as thumbnail photos but the
16bit files are just an icon that opens up in office picture manager to a
small square box with a red x . The 42mg file is there (when I go to
properties it indicates the file is there) but only the suare with the x is
displayed. It worked yesterday! Thanks for any help.
