office pro 2000

We bought this CD in 2002 for the old computer where it is still installed.
We already had Windows 97 in. We have bought a new computer. The new computer
refuses to allow Office 2000 in, talking about no validating and qualifying
product (it has windows xp). If I uninstall 2000 from the old computer will I
be able to but it in the new one? If I try and it fails, will I get it back
in the old computer? DB

It sounds like when you bought it, you purchased an "Upgrade" version.
That requires that you have the qualifying software to be available to
install. If you do not have the qualifying software anymore you won't be
able to install Office. You may have had MS Works on the old PC as the
qualifying software, but in a nutshell, you will need to have a copy for
your Office install to work. Whether it is still on the old PC or not
has not bearing on the difficulties you are having. And if you remove it
from the old PC, you will need the qualifying software to put Office
back on.

No, and no.

The message about a "qualifying product" indicates that the Office 2000 CD
is an "upgrade" version. In order to install it, you must have some previous
version (in your case, Office 97) installed on the computer, or at least you
must have the installation disk for the previous version as evidence that
you own something that can be upgraded.

If there's any chance you still have the Office 97 disk, hunt around and
find it; or ask around to see if any friends or relatives still have one
(the chance is slim).

Don't uninstall Office 2000 from the old computer until you know you can
install it on the new computer. Otherwise you'll be stuck just like you are
now -- no Office on the old computer, and no qualifying disk to put in.
