office problem

Can anyone suggest a fix for the problem :

we have a machine that was upgraded fromwin 95 to xp and
office 2000 installed .
On the server we have office 97 and there are many
documents stored centrally.
When attempting to open a document on the xp machine that
is stored on the server and was created under the
templates from office 97 it can take upwards of 3 minutes
to open .
Fresh documents are ok , the problem only appears with
documents created under the templates from office 97.

thanks

Hi William,

Since this problem occurs when you open documents from the server I
suspect Word is attempting to locate the attached template. It is
unable to find it an it eventually times out and opens the document.

There isn't a fix for this problem until Word 2002:

For previous versions there are several workarounds which can be found
in: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=830561
