Office product files and icons

For the first few months I had Office, my files were saved and opened from
e-mail attachments properly. Then one day I looked at my Word files and they
were all "magically" changed to WordPad files (with the WordPad icon). All of
my Excel icon were gone and replaced with generic icons (the .xls extensions
are still there). In addition, whenever I download any Office product
attachment from an e-mail, and ask it to open, it doesn't automatically open
in Word, Excel, PPT etc. The system asks me what program I want to open it
in. How can I fix this so it functions properly?
