Office products cannot open files

James

I've installed Office xp on a windows 2000 laptop, and all
my document based programs, ie word, excel come up with
a "File unavailable" error. I can creat new files, but
once they are created and closed, I cannot reopen the
file.

I have the same problem with office 2003 student/teacher addition. I have been waiting for answers. I removed my antivirus programs, but no effect. I am completely puzzled. I do not know if I can remove and reload office 2003 without effecting the # of allowed licensed copies. Product info does not explain what effect this would fhave. You are allowed to enter program onto 3 of your families student computers.

Have you installed the latest service pack/release/whatever it is?
(Actually, I think I've seen it referred to as a "critical update.") Go
to Help/Check for Updates and install them.

I am having the same problem. I just installed Office XP yesterday.

I have Symantic AV Corporate Edition, but there doesn't seem to be a
"Office Plug-In" anywhere that I can disable.

I have also installed the Critical Update from
http://office.microsoft.com .

Several of us upgraded yesterday and I'm the only one to have this
problem.

Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Tracy

Hi Tracy,

If Norton AV was previously installed and Norton CE installed later
then the DLL for the Office Plug-in could still be registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. It does
not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional
details on the unregister command if you need them:
