Office programmes not opening

Found a posting relating to this matter. Recommended installing an
update etc etc. Did the trick. Took about 5 minutes all in all.
Spent about 2 hours on the phone to Apple support and then Microsoft
support and got NOWHERE!!!! I now know where to turn in future.

Thanks for confirming this. Microsoft is being very slow to disseminate
this information to their phone people, and Apple is trying its damndest not
to admit they broke things with their update :)

Hello guys,

I did call into Microsoft Technical Support for Mac and they informed
me that there is a issue with the Office applications not launching
just bouncing on the dock and then disappearing. They did inform me
that it has to do with the latest Mac OS update which installs
Quicktime 7.2 which is breaking Rosetta CFM applications on Intel
based Macs. This would include Microsoft Office, older versions of
Photoshop (including CS2), and many, many others.

There is a Apple combo update located here
www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10410comboupdatev11intel.html -
after downloading this and restarting the Mac OS, I am able to open
my Office applications and other programs as well.

Thanks Darlene:

Yep, they're onto it at last :)

Cheers

Are there any other solutions for this issue?

Have you tried the variation on macfixit.com ?
A snippet from there:-
Another workaround that has proved effective for some users (especially
those who never had the pre-release Java system installed) is to force
installation of QuickTime 7.1.6 using the tool Pacifist, then
re-install the Mac OS X 10.4.10 combo updater via these steps.
1. Download QuickTime 7.1.6 but do not attempt to install
2. Download and launch Pacifist
3. In Pacifist, click the "Open Package" button, then locate and
open the QuickTime 7.1.6 .pkg file.
4. Click the lock and enter your administrator password, then click
the "Install" button.]
5. Download and install the Mac OS X 10.4.10 combo updater.

It must be a real hassle for those like you who were bitten by this. I
blithely pressed the software update buttons on my Mac Pro and it all
worked like a charm. I'm still wondering what's different.

But then the OS X 10.4.10 update blew my Boko out of the water, thereby
upsetting my theory that it must have been haxies. I have the most
scrupulously clean haxie-free environment known to mankind.

An "Archive & Install" has been required for some users to fix the problem.

"Archive and Install" moves existing system files to a folder named Previous
System and then installs Mac OS X again.

Just be sure to check Preserve Users and Network Settings when you select
Archive & Install.

Having applied the 10.4.10 combo updater, you must then update prebinding...

Go to www.apple.com/quicktime/download and download the quicktime 7
free download this usually fixes the issue as well
