Office programs hang when font changes are attempted

I have a maddening problem: when I attempt to make font
changes in Powerpoint or Excel the application stops
responding immediately. This includes trying to change
font size, font type, bold, italic, etc. The dropdown list
of fonts doesn't appear when i click on it; it hangs even
before it does that. Any help would be more than
appreciated!

Do you have a local printer driver installed?

I have had the same issue. I have upgraded from office 2000 to office 2003 and I still have the problem. I wonder if the fonts are missing somehow. I have other systems where the problem does not exist. I also ran the "detect and repair" under help, but the problem is still there. I have not found any answers at the Microsoft web site.

I don't see the original thread to this, so I don't know what others
have suggested, but I can tell you that PPT especially looks for local
printer drivers.

So, even if you don't have a printer hooked up to your machine, at least
install one on it so PPT has drivers to refer to.

http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00034.htm explains it a bit better.
