Office programs open slow when files are double-clicked

Have a weird one, here. When I open, say, Word, the program opens up fine
and I can access the open file dialogs and open files successfully.
However, if I double-click a word document (without Word open), the system
nearly hangs and it takes about 4 minutes for Word start and open the
document.
It happens for all office programs.

I have the same problem though at 30 seconds (not as severe as your four
minutes). Any suggestions gratefully received.

I'm having exactly the same problem and it only started yesterday, although
i've had ofice 2003 loaded for several weeks. Double clicking takes 25 secs
to open Word, then another 65 secs to open the document. Within Word, file
open works normallly. And yes, the same with excel.

I've eventually sorted this one, though not entriely to my satisfaction. It's
caused by something that runs on startup, but I haven't yet identified the
culprit. Go to start -run and type in msconfig and OK. Look at the startup
tab -you'll see a whole host of things that run in the background, in my case
27 of them. Click 'disable all' and OK and reboot. You should now find Office
opens files normally. Its now a matter of ticking each of theses items one at
a time, and finding out which one is causing the problem. Some of these are
useful, eg. there are those which look for the latest anti-virus update, so
you don't want these turned off indefinitely, but some have a very obscure
function, and some might just be adware, so take the time to find out what
they're doing and you'll be much more in control.
I'll report back when I've found out which one is causing the slowdown.
