Office Project 2003 refuses to install

Jim McCants

I've just had to re-install Office 2003 Professional. Everything worked
fine EXCEPT installing Project 2003. I get the message = "...cannot be
installed when another instance of .... is already present. ..... remove the
previous instance using Add/Remove ... from the Control Panel."

I have deleted all references to Project from the Registry and cannot find
any of the Project files in C:\Program Files. Not under Office11 directory
or anywhere else. This should install - but, I get the above message every
time I try to install. Project does not even show up in the Control Panel of
files to Remove!

Does anyone know of a particular file that is being detected by the
Installer that is causing it to think that Project is already installed and
then refuses to install. Or, is there a way to force the installation?

Would certainly appreciate some guidance on this matter. I see where
"Corren" has the same problem - but, did not list with the correct subject
heading (PP203 Installation on 11/22/2003). That is why I'm posting.

Thanks in advance!

That's because Project is not included with Office Professional 2003 which
is:

a.. Microsoft Word 2003
a.. Microsoft Excel 2003
a.. Microsoft Outlook 2003
a.. Microsoft PowerPoint 2003
a.. Microsoft Access 2003
a.. Microsoft Publisher 2003
a.. Microsoft Outlook 2003 with Business Contact Manager

Project has never been included in MS Office.

I know that Project is not part of Office. That has nothing to do with
Project refusing to re-install. I deleted all of Office, Publisher, Visio
and Project. Everything re-installed except Project! The local Indians on
Microsoft payroll who are supposed to be "Professionals" - don't have a clue
as to how to force Project to re-install! I guess that I'll have to
reformat the drive - that's the only way I know for sure that anything and
everything of Microsoft's will no longer be on the drive.

That's a poor choice if you ask me. I'd find what's causing the conflict and
resolve it before I reformatted my drive.

Why don't you post the full error message here so we can see if we can
figure out what it is?

You may need to go through your registry and delete all references to
Project2003.

Do you really think I have not done this already?
Looks as though not one has a remedy.

Even if the person doesn't have a clue, they should (somehow or another)
to be encouraged to get a clue or elevate the query.

I have no special knowledge or experience in getting Microsoft
assistance. Perhaps do an online request to avoid (initially) having to
talk to out-sourced scripted support personnel.

Since this really a problem more closely related to the OS, perhaps you
can simultaneously post on a newsgroup associted with XP (this the OS
you are using?...I can't spot where you say that), e.g.
microsoft.public.windowsxp.basics. Ensure you say you asked in the
Microsoft Project forum (otherwise the flippant response there may be to
ask in the Microsoft Project forum.

You are looking for someone who has a lot of experience/knowledge in
installing software, and maybe with Project 2003 experience. Experts in
*using* Microsoft Project aren't necessarily going to know that.

For your own working the problem, *maybe* the following might help:

- http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;830613
- any affect if you do a repair install of the windows xp os?

Hi Folks,

For your information, I contacted Microsoft, who tied it in with a query
from Jim McCants, and eventually solved the problem. I quote: " We found
that the customer had a previous copy of either Project 2003 or Office 2003
on the machine. Once this was removed by using MSZap for Installer 2.0,
customer was able to complete the installation. "

Hi Mike:

Where does one obtain MSZap? Searching downloads or the knowledge base
for "MSZap for Intaller" turns up nothing.

I found it on my WinXP CD, then also on Microsoft site, search there.
However it did not help me in getting the program installed. One really has to know a bit about programming to use it properly without wiping out more than just obsolete entries for Project. I gave up. I'll wait until somebody comes up with a step by step process how to do it.
