Office Project doesn't connect to Project Server

I have just finished installing Microsoft Project Server 2007 on a new
Windows 2003 windows server machine which is a member of a office domain. I
have installed and configured (as much as I understand) all of the sharepoint
services and sharepoint admin and this works fine and is accessible by domain
users and inaccessible by non domain users. With sharepoint I created a new
"Web Application" based on the Project tracking template. Again, this is
accessible through IE on both local server and on remote machines. However,
when I add in the relevant link informaiton and credentials to the "Project
Server Accounts" app that runs under office tools, and then try to open
Microsoft Office Project 2007 I get a dialog box with the following message.

"Login Failed. Project could not connect to server" Please check your
username and ...

Can anyone shed any light on what I am missing and why this isn't working?

I have already added the url to the project server in my local IE trusted
sites. Beyond that, i'm not sure what to try next.

Any information would be appreciated.

During installation you specified an account to be the Project Server
administrator. You must first logon to Project Web Access using that account
and then create accounts within Project Server for other users so that they
can logon. Until you specify other users accounts, the only account you can
use to logon is the one that you specified during installation.

Gary,
Thank you very much for your response. I have done this, and still get the
same problem.

Here is exactly what i've done and this might help you understand a bit more
about the problem I am facing, as I am not sure how clear I was in my first
post.

1. Installed Project Server 2007 on a Windows 2003 Server
- Part of the install asks how I am installing Project Server and I chose
"On a single Server"
- Also part of the install it asks to install sharepoint which I have done.
2. Once done I went to the central administration web UI and configured all
of the sharepoint services and added the local server (same machine) to the
server farm as the only server in the farm. (had to supply credentials for DB
access (again local SQL 2005) and domin account to run the services under
which I supplied but was not My own domain credentials.
3. It then asks to create a Shared Service (i believe is the name) and as
part of setting this up, it asks to create a web application which is where I
created the Project Server environment. Running on port 84 of the local
machine (does it need to run on port 80?)
4. Logged into the web access on port 84 on my personal desktop and setup
users to access the project server.
5. On local machine, I create an account in the Project Server Accounts
dialog which is what my local copy of Office Project Professional uses to log
into Project Server.
6. When I open Office Project Professional I get a login details error.

I have just logged in with the system account that I used to create the
sharepoint and Project Server environment with and still get the same issue.

What have I missed?

Your help is much appreciated!

Are you certain you typed everything correctly? Included the port number in
the URL?

Did you add yourself and other users to the proper groups? Yourself to Admin
group?

I am 100% sure I have typed the URL correctly. And as I said, on my local PC
I can web browse the sharepoint services and the web application via port
number in Internet Explorer and they recognise who I am (pre-logged in with
my credentials) and I am able to create tasks, people etc.

Hi Gary,

One thing I just noticed. When I open the Office Project Server Accounts
dialog, near the bottom it says "Current Account" and next to it, it says
"none".
There is nowhere in this tool to specify a current user. Do you know where
this should be set and if that is the reason I cannot log in?

It sounds as though you may not have installed the full enterprise version
and chosen the single server basic install. This may or may not meet your
evaluation requirements. Clearly, the login you specified in for the Project
Server account does not have access to the PWA site you are trying to
connect to, or you have typed an incorrect URL in the connection string, or
you simply don't have a functioning PWA site.

You say you logged onto PWA. Are you certain that you can load the PWA web
site via the browser, or are you logging into the site collection in
SharePoint? I'm sorry I have to ask this, but do you know the difference?
When you say "I have added everyone in my team to the Site as "Project
Server Owners," it gives me concern as this is a SharePoint term and not a
PWA term. If you can confirm that you logged into PWA to create the users,
what Project Server security groups did you add them to?

I have a strong feeling that time spent on TechNet reading through the
deployment guidance or a copy of our book, Implementing and Administering
Microsoft Office Project Server would save you lots of time.

I have the same problem when trying to allow access to the other
users. I have the account installed on my computer and others can log
in from my machine, but not theirs.
