Office Project Gallery and Help system crash...

I've read all the posts on crashes in Office apps when attempting to
access the "Project Gallery" either automatically during startup or
while an application is in-use. I'm running OS X 10.2.6 on a G4/500
Powerbook. The machine runs beautifully except that Office apps crash
either when attempting to access the Project Gallery or when
attempting to access the Help system in Office apps. I have removed
every font except the fonts in the Fonts folder in the "System" (OS X)
folder. I've even try disabling a subset of the fonts in the "System"
(OS X) folder. I have removed all Quicktime components except those
in the "System" (OS X) folder. I have tossed all MS prefs that I
could find. I have checked the HD with Disk Utility and with Disk
Warrior 2.x and 3.0. I have tossed all OS X font caches. I have
disabled all 3rd party OS X add-ons. Each time I changed something, I
rebooted the machine and tossed all the Office prefs. Still, Office
apps crash when attempting to access the Project Gallery or when
attempting to access the "Help" system. This problem exists both when
running Office 10.1.2 and Office 10.1.4. Is there any one who has any
other suggestions on how to stop the Office apps from crashing
(besides not using the Project Gallery or Help system which is not an
option)?

Hi

Have you tried any of these things?

* Use disk utility first aid to repair permissions
* Use DiskWarrior to make sure your hard drive is OK?
* Run Norton Utilities to make sure your hard drive is OK?
* Run speed disk to make sure your drive is not so fragmented that there's
not enough contiguous space to write a file?

I have a question: What QuickTime plug-in do you have and what version
(eg: DivX plug-in version 5.0.6...). I suspect there might be a link.
Other people have reported the same issue in the French newsgroup and it
was related to the DivX plug-in.

Hi. Thank you for the suggestions. Some I have already tried.

Yes.

Ditto

Don't trust Norton

Again, don't trust Norton. I have however run Plus Optimizer from OS
9 recently.

I've narrowed the problem down to Office's use of QT to display images
in the help files and the Project Gallery window. For some reason
Office is having trouble interfacing with QT. All my OS X software is
up-to-date, so its like something is just out of whack.

Hence my question... What QT plug-in do you have in /Library/QuickTime
or ~/Library/QuickTime (~/ being your user folder) ?????
(and what version)

Hi Corentin,

I have read about the QT plug-in issue. Very early on, I trashed all
3rd party plug-ins in the ~/Library/Quicktime folder and
Library/Quicktime folder. I think QT or Office has not yet recognized
that these 3rd party plug-ins are gone. Sounds wierd, but I can't
think any better explanation.

Hi Mychailo ,

It might be a conflict with plug-ins in /Library as well. You could move
them to the desktop and reboot (you need to log out and back in for the
system to acknowledge that the plugins in ~/Library are gone but you
have to reboot for the plug ins in /Library).

Corentin

Corentin,

I've done that (including the reboot). It didn't cure the crashes.

That's really weird... The only times I've seen that in Office >10.1.2
was when a QT plug-in was conflicting. I really don't know what it could
be then. You can try deleting some of the Office prefs just in case (or
simply put them to the desktop, log out and back in)...
