Office Setup Assistant doesn't go past the Product Key page

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I installed Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac with one of the ten product keys I had. Later, I found out that the product key I chose was already in use. I was prompted by a help page to delete two files: one from Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office (it started with the letters Office), the other from Users/username/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008. Then I was prompted to restart my computer and start up any of the Microsoft Office 2008 programs. I was told that Microsoft Setup Assistant would start up, and it did.

The problem is that now when I'm trying to put in a new product key, when I click on the "Continue" button, nothing happens. It should go to the next screen but it just stays at that screen.

Please help me overcome this issue. I've checked that the product key is accurate and I inputted my name, which I realize is a required field. In fact, the "Continue" button is not accessible until you enter everything you need to enter. Yet, when I click on the button, nothing happens.

Can anyone help me with this issue?

Thanks,

Tossa

Hmmmm, not a usual problem. Restart your computer twice. Now try. If that
doesn't work, you could try in a new User and see if it worked, but it might
take a re-install of Office to fix the issue.

Let me know if any of these help.

Dear Diane,

Thanks for your quick response.

I reinstalled Office and Office is working again. However, after I reinstalled Office, I started getting a seemingly unrelated error message in Safari that says:

A keychain cannot be found to store "Safari."

It keeps coming up repeatedly no matter that I restore the defaults as I am prompted to do. Any advice on how to make it stop?

Glad to hear Office is working.

Running Keychain First Aid should help the Safari issue, but because of your
unusual problems, I'm also going to advise running the Apple combo updater
as well. If you keep experiencing odd problems, you might need to do an
"Archive & Install" of the OS.

COMBO UPDATER FOR APPLE:

Download the combo updater from Apple and run it again rather than using
Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially problem-causing files.
Combo updaters will install on the same version as they¹re applying‹no need
to roll back or do a clean install. (Restart twice!!)

Leopard:

Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update (For both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs )
<http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update>

KEYCHAIN FIRST AID:

Open Keychain Access application in Applications/Utilities folder. Run
Keychain First Aid. It's in the Keychain menu under Keychain Access.

Repair Permissions: To use Repair Permissions:
1. Open Disk Utility in your Applications/Utility folder.
2. Click on the First Aid tab and select Repair Permissions
3. Click on the icon for your boot volume.
4. Click the repair permissions button.

Don't run from CD. Updates contain a newer versions of the application's
permissions.

ARCHIVE & INSTALL

1) Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc and double-click the Install Mac OS X
icon.

2) Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select the
destination disk, select your current Mac OS X disk (in most cases, it will
be the only one available).

3) Click Options. If you want to save your existing files, users, and
network settings, select ³Archive and Install,² and then select ³Preserve
Users and Network Settings.² If you want to erase everything on your
computer and reinstall Mac OS X, select ³Erase and Install.² You can¹t
recover erased data.

4) Click Continue.

5) Click Customize to select which parts of Mac OS X you¹d like to install,
or click Install to perform a basic installation (recommended).

Once the install has finished, your system will be at whatever level the
disk you have is. So if your Install DVD/CD disk is 10.5.0, that's what
version of OS will be on your Mac. You will need to download the appropriate
Combo Updater from Apple's site to restore the system to a higher version.
After you run the combo, allow Software Update to download and install any
additional updates.

Dear Diane,

Thanks for another prompt response.

I tried the Keychain First Aid solution and the error message stopped after that. Maybe that fixed the problem, or maybe it was something else (The error messages had kind of stopped before I used Keychain First Aid.)

It might have been that I hadn't emptied the trash after putting the prior installation of Office 2008 there. When I tried to empty the trash (and the error message kept popping up), there were one or two files that wouldn't delete and said that they were in use. Later, after I deleted all the files in the trash (the computer allowed me to), the error message stopped popping up.

In any case, thank you again for your help and I wish you all the best.

This sounds like you didn't restart and the Finder was still "attached" to
the files in the trash.

Now you have an arsenal to help with any future trouble.

Hy

I have the same problem with you. I delete the files that they said and
after that I restart the computer, but doesn't appear the Office Assistend.
In this case what should I have to do?

Thanks,

Are you saying you are having a problem with the continue button? If not,
please start your own thread and give your details. This way your problem
won't be confused with this thread and you'll get the attention you need.

If Entourage is working I'm not sure what the problem is now.

i purchased my computer from a friend, with office preinstalled on it. he
gave me the product keys, but not the cd, because he lost it. thus, i can't
reinstall office from the disk. can anyone tell me how to get past this
"continue" button? i have the valid product key -- i just can't get past the
continue button!

Your friend could have downloaded Office from the net and the keys you are
using are illegal. Regardless you need the DVD to do a re-install.

If you can install under one user account and not under another, try unlocking the Microsoft User Data folder in Users/yourname/Documents. It took me eight installs and over an hour wasted to work that out - what a bore.
