I get to the part in the setup where it says "Create an Office Identity" but when I click "Continue" nothing happens. I have closed it and reopened it several times and even tried reinstalling Office, but I still am having the same problem. Can anyone help me?

Is this part of the Setup Assistant when you are installing Office? Are they
just asking for you name, address etc?

If you cancel out, does it finish? BTW, there is no need to register. All it
does it put you on a mailing list. There is no activation.

Did you install Office with Admin permission?
Did you move Office 2008 to a different drive?

A screenshot would be great. You can send me one off list or use ImageShack
to post a link for the list.

Thanks for the screenshot. It is the Setup Assistant. If Continue does not
work, then I would look at permissions. You've passed the usual problems
like entering the CD key. This info is really not even necessary for Word to
function, but the Setup Assistant needs to quit and seems to be stuck here.

Again....
Did you install Office with Admin permission?
Did you move Office 2008 to a different drive?

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or
if it¹s your User¹s folder that contains the problem.

Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the
New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Launch Word and see
if it will allow you to continue.

I am having the same problem and I already tried this:
<http://machouse.mhvt.net/?p=1146>
Unfortunately it made no difference. I did move this copy of Office from one computer to another today because I got a new laptop and I no longer have the office installation disc. Any other ideas?

I am the admin account, I am the only account. It is on my laptop and it came pre-installed. I have not moved office to a different drive or anything like that, all I have done is try to open it and it wont work.

And I also tried the link that smmirx provided and it didn't solve the problem for me either. I'm very frustrated with this and I wish someone could tell me how to solve this problem.

Your problem is different ‹ You can't simply "move" Office from one system
to another, nor does the Apple Migration utility work reliably for complex
applications. You need to actually *install* Office on the new Mac. If you
don't have the Office DVD I'm afraid you're out of luck unless the disk was
lost, stolen or damaged. If you can establish proof of purchase you can
contact MS Support to see if you can obtain a replacement disk... I believe
there is a fee of ~US $50, but it's better than having to repurchase.

No guarantees of a fix, but try this:

1- Restart your Mac

2- Hold the Shift key while you log in ‹ if you have your Account set to log
in automatically, log out then hold shift while you log back in

3- Run Apple's Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions

4- Launch an Office app & see if you get stuck at the same place again

Reply with your results... At least this may point in the right direction.

I am the admin account, I am the only account. It is on my laptop and it came
pre-installed.

Was it pre-installed by the person you purchased the computer from, or was
it installed by a the vendor?

I've seen lots of cases where users purchased a computer with preinstalled
software and most of the time this is illegal. They don't give out the
installer DVD because they are going to continue using it.
I have not moved office to a different drive or anything like
that, all I have done is try to open it and it wont work.

I asked you to test in a new User, but you didn't do that or report back on
results. If you want help, then you need to answer the questions. I had to
ask twice just to get you to reply to the if you installed as admin.

I tried CyberTaz's suggestion and it did not work. I purchased the laptop from apple online with the software pre-installed and I have the installation DVD. I created a new user and switched over and the program did work on the new user but it still will not work on the admin account.

I tried CyberTaz's suggestion and it did not work. I purchased the laptop from
apple online with the software pre-installed and I have the installation DVD.
I created a new user and switched over and the program did work on the new
user but it still will not work on the admin account.

Then the problem is in your User's account.

Move the Microsoft User Data folder in Documents to the desktop. Now launch
any Office application. Does it launch now?

If you Log out, then log in with the Shift key down, does it launch now?

If both of these fail, check the other options to troubleshoot your User's
account here:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/test_user.html>

Some users have found it easier to move into a new User than track down the
problem in the current User.

The fact that my suggestion didn't didn't have any effect is fairly solod
proof of Diane's diagnosis - Follow her advice.

I ended up just creating a new account and deleted the old one. It works fine now, it just seemed like the simplest solution to the problem. Thank you all for all of your help in fixing this problem.
