Office SharePoint Designer - Error Messages

Popup Error window title is:
"Open File"
Error Message isL
"You ca't open this location using this program.
Please try a different location."
Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer version is:
12.0.4518.1014

Error message appears consistently when menu File/Open is used.
Other symtoms are a long wait for the error message and application crash.
Fortunately the crash is only 10% of File/Open usage.
Following a crash 3 weeks ago a few megabytes of information was sent to
Microsoft.
No updates since then and nothing in the knowledgebase.

Please advise!
