Office should retain documents that are closed without being save

Documents that are closed without being saved could nevertherless be given a
name (such as "Discarded(1)"), saved, and listed in the file menu. If the
user changes his mind before the file falls off the end of the recent
documents list, then the document could be retrieved.

Since such documents are usually notes, the storage requried would be small.

Office specifically asks if you wish to save the document if you make
changes. If you say yes it will save it as "Document1" or 2 or 3 etc.
Please use this available feature.
