Office - show menu delay setup

R

Rudolf

Hello,

Where can I modify the show menu delay for MS Office?

Windows has a registry setting that can be changed (TweakUI offers
this option too) but Office appears to have its separate setting since
it behaves independently of Windows menu speed.

Any ideas where in registry can this Office show menu delay setting be
changed?

Are you referring to the personalized menus in which the menu fully
opens after a delay? If so then in the Office apps go to
Tools/Customize and on the Options tab turn off/on the appropriate
option:

Word 2000 - 2002: Turn off "Menus show recently used commands first"
Word 2003: Turn on "Always show full menus"

No, I am referring to the delay when a menu subfolder opens. Windows
has it set for Start Menu by default to 400 ms and it can be set to 0
in the Registry (or using TweakUI). However, Office seems to have its
own setting, and I would like to reset it as well. The question is,
where in the registry is it located?

I believe the option you are looking for is in the same place. :)
Under Tools/Customize/Options try setting your menu animation to
"(System default)" and they should follow your Windows settings.

I have this option set to (System Default) and yet it still fails to
follow my Windows settings. Any ideas what is the missing setting
here?

I'm not sure which Windows setting you are changing but the menu
effects follow the Windows Display Properties/Appearance/Effects/Use
the following transition for menus and tooltips.

If you want to remove the delay then turn this option off.

If that isn't it then perhaps you can tell me which option you are
using and how you have it set in TweakUI so that I can get a better
understanding of what you are referring to.

By Default, in your Start menu, when you open every sub-menu, it
usually has a short delay before opening (set to 400 ms by default).

You can use TweakUI/Mouse/Menu Speed and slide the bar to the far left
(under Fast), to set this delay to 0. After you do this, the annoying
delay in Windows Start menu is gone.

However, I noticed that Office also has similar annoying delays when
opening its menus, except it does not abide by the changes you can
make with TweakUI to the Start menu delay. I am trying to find the
registry setting where I can control this delay for Office menus as
well.

Okay, NOW I follow you. :)

I'm not aware of any reg hack or option in the Office apps that will
display submenus without a slight delay nor do I think there is one
available. It would be located here if one was available:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\Toolbars

(Of course I could be wrong but I'm fairly familiar with the Office
app reg hacks.)

Also, if I use the Windows XP default Start menu I still see a slight
delay when viewing "All Programs". Once the data is accumulated then
the submenus open immediately. I found the same menu response in other
applications as well.

The reason I am looking for the Show Menu Delay setting for Office is
because there must be another setting that controls animations in
Office. I have two computers, both have animations under TweakUI
disabled. Yet somehow, when I delete email in Outlook on one machine,
it slides onto the next email (it animates). On another machine, it
just skips to the next email without any animation.

TweakUI settings and Outlook settings are identical on both machines,
yet one Outlook still animates and the other one does not. I thought
there would be an area in the registry that would control this for
Office along with the Show Menu Delay.

Hi Rudolf,

Are you using Word as the email editor?

In Word in Tools=>Options=>General is the
'Provide feedback with animation' setting turned on?

In the Advanced settings for Internet Explorer is
the 'show transitions' setting turned on?

If you set the Tools=>Customize=>Options command
that Beth mentioned to 'unfold' do you still get
the 'slide' effect in the email?

Now that we know you are referring to Outlook and not necessarily menu
animation, can you provide us the version of Outlook you are using as
well?

Hi,

The version is Outlook 2003.

Yes, I am using Word as the email editor in both cases.

"Provide feedback with animation" in Word setting is off (changing it
has no effect on the slide effect in the email)

Advanced settings in IE have page transitions disabled.

Tools/Customize/Options in Outlook when set to unfold has no effect on
the sliding of the emails.

As I said both machines have identical settings, except they differ in
sliding the emails. I think the difference could lie in the fact that
the machine currently not sliding emails is part of an Active
Directory Domain. My suspicion is that the domain administrator has
set a group policy disabling this sliding effect in Outlook, but I am
looking to find out where this setting might be located (in Registry
and/or Group Policy template).
