Office Skills testing

M Skabialka

Is there somewhere I can find a test we can give to potential new employees
to see if they really do know Word and Excel, and know how to operate a
computer with Windows 2000? When we ask them they always say they are
experts but then we find out they know how to turn on the PC and not much
else.

I was hoping for something free if possible, and maybe on the line of:

Turn on the PC, find this document and make these changes. Now find this
spreadsheet and do the following...

We need a test that separates the people who know and understand computers
and software from the others. I don't think it has to be long and complex,
just hit the highlights.

Thanks,
Mich

Hi M.,

For MS Office you may want to look at the
http://microsoft.com/officespecialist site
or check with the folks in the
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.skills_assessment
newsgroup. There are also certification sites and
services you'll find through a websearch or check
with one of the larger temporary services agencies
on the tests they use.

That's not what I had in mind at all.
I want to give them a piece of paper with instructions, and have them follow
the instructions and print out what they have accomplished. If we hire them
that will go into their employee folder as proof of their skills.

Surely someone has already devised such a test? This test is for an admin
person, not a programmer.

Perhaps we should test your web-searching abilities :)

The main Office page at www.microsoft.com/office has links to trainign and
certification resources such as

Make up your own test so it applies to the things done in your office. You
know what you need done - compile some exercises to do it - and see how they
perform.

At first I thought you were being really cynical, but the requirements site
lists all of the skills and this may be what we can use to put together a
test - it would still be great if someone else has already done this though!

So you didn't bother looking at any of the exam links on those pages?????
