Office SLOW in Panther!

Since installing Panther (10.3) Office, esp. Word, will hang with the
beachball spinning for long periods when doing something innocuous as
opening or saving. Eventually, after 3-4 minutes, it completes the
task. But Word is unusable in this state.

Anyone know what's going on?
