Office slow saving files across WAN.

When using Excel and Word saving files across the WAN is horribly slow. I
can copy the same 1 mb file in seconds using explorer, but when saving in
Office it can take 2 to 5 minutes.

I have read numerous articles about disconnecting drive mappings and
changing registry settings but to no avail. I even think I have an article
that Microsoft is essentially saying they know Office is slow.

I need a fix for this. I am regretting upgrading to 2003 from Office 97.
