Office SP2 does not install on Student XP

Automatic Updates has been repeatedly coming up with Office 2003 Service Pack
2 Update and repeatedly downloading and failing to install. I've also tried
installing directly from the website, where again it downloads, then fails to
install. I can't do the logfile fix that some have suggested in previous
posts of this problem because my search of the harddrive for the specified
folder or files comes up empty.

I've recently installed Visual Basic on my computer as required for one of
my courses. We were then told to do a search for microsoft updates, and
that's when this issue started.

The best I can guess is that, with the student version of XP, I do not have
the permissions necessary for the update? In which case, I'd need to lug my
laptop to the university Help Desk and have them install it? I'm not sure,
and I'd really prefer to avoid that since they have a penchant for using the
cloning technique =P

Any suggestions? While installing would be preferable, I wouldn't mind a way
to just remove the file from my update list; the Office programs work fine
without the update, but it's annoying to have that little yellow shield on my
taskbar 24/7.

No errors popups, just says it "failed". I

'm not sure if posting links or pictures here is OK, but I've taken
screenshots of the sequence where I get the first <a
href="http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/7108/autoupdatefail3dc3.png"> (image
1) Autoupdate announcement</a> that there is an update to install;
after clicking Download, it proceeds to go about its business, then <a
href="http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/5240/autoupdatefail1ty3.png"> (image
2) 'lo, it fails!</a> That shows for a split second, then changes to <a
href="http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/5396/autoupdatefail2wx2.png">(image
3) a box saying that "some updates could not be installed."</a> After
clicking Close, the autoupdate shield goes away for about 5 minutes, then
pops up again with that same update notification.

I've also tried updating from the Office site using the Office Update
Wizard, but <a
href="http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/3145/officeupdatewizardfailbb1.png">(image
4) it too fails.</a> A similar failure occurs when trying from the Microsoft
Windows Updates page. And the update history there shows <a
href="http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/9536/microupdatefail4oo4.png">(image
5) a series of red x's</a> next to all my attempts to install the Office 2003
SP2 update.

Any advice would be appreciated. In the meantime, I'll try asking the Help
Desk if we have the permissions needed to download Office SP2.
Thanks in advance!
