OFFICE TEXT SELECTION

S

steph

In Word 2002 SP3 (Office Product):
In Outlook, with the Word editor (Office Product):
In Outlook, without the Word editor (Office Product):

Also in the text-field into which I type in MS Newsgroups,
including this one:

(But NOT in Outlook Express - not Office product)

The ghost in my system keeps selecting text for me: I can
be just sitting here, minding my own business, typing any
old thing, and happen to leave the shift-key depressed
longer than is absolutely required.

An unwanted selection begins at the blinking insertion
point, and ends wherever the pointer "I-beam" happens to
be at the moment. It stops exactly at the I-beam, and
then includes the entire word (I have Word set to select
full words, so maybe this does follow some rules).
Yes, you are right: it is as if I have been selecting by
the "click (at the beginning) - shift - click (at the
end)" method. But I did NOT click at either end!

I could work around this, except that.

When I release the shift key, and even press the "ESC"
key, the selection does not become unselected. Even
clicking the mouse also does not de-select it. I just
have to wait for it to get ready to behave.

When I get tired of waiting, I click Ctrl-Alt-Delete/Task
Manager, all programs indicate "running." I hit ESC,
returning me to the document, which now shows no
selection, and all is well for a time.

Sometimes I have to invoke adult supervision (the Task
Manager) multiple times before it releases.

Other open programs are also frozen during this time.

Except for freezing up everything (!!?), this could be
useful, so perhaps it is a corrupted sub-set of commands
used for something. I considered accessibility, so tried
installing and uninstalling MouseKeys; it's the same
either way.

Microphone??

I'm running Windows 2000.

Under Sounds-Multimedia, I found ESS Maestro, but no way
to de-select it.

Under Regional Options/Input Locales/Input Languages &
Methods, I have removed Speech Recognition and Handwriting.
After a reboot, I have the same problem.

Where else shall I look?

Even if you don't have a microphone plugged in Speech Recognition
could be causing the problem. Take a look under the Tools menu and
make sure Speech isn't enabled.

If that isn't it then do you have a laptop? I've found occasionally
when typing or using the touch pad it will go into a selection mode.
This isn't exclusive to Office apps as it happens in all applications.

Thanks, Beth.

Yes, Speech is disabled in Word. Outlook does not have a
speech option.

Yes, it's a laptop. My Touchpad settings have tapping
disabled.

When I test the problem, I (1) Keep my hands away from
EVERYTHING except the following, in the order specified:
(2) CLICK an insertion point with the Left mousekey, (3)
move the mouse cursor - pointer - to another location, (4)
remove my hands from the keyboard and touchpad, (5) touch
NOTHING else, (4) depress one SHIFT key. After a moment,
the highlighting appears.

The problem DOES NOT occur in Outlook Express. And cannot
be replicated there.

What's next?

Thanks, Rob. Good thought. Although I've not seen anyone
complaining about anything similar.

I run with Norton Autoprotect and LiveUpdate activated; my
virus defs are from 2/28; and my most recent Full System
Scan was 5/14.

But I just ran a Full system scan again; and still have
the same problem.

Is there something else I should do to check for viruses?

|||

|||| Even if you don't have a microphone plugged in Speech

|||

||||
|||| If that isn't it then do you have a laptop? I've found
|||
||| occasionally
|||

|||
|||| This isn't exclusive to Office apps as it happens in all

Geez, get a live update and run current .dat files. There have been many
