Office Ultimate 2007 (Student version) - transferring to new laptopand licensing

Bobby

I bought a new laptop last week and I want to give my old one to my
daughter.

I have installed the Office Ultimate (Student version) both my new and
old laptops but I am concerned about licensing restrictions.

Should I remove the version of Office 2007 from my old laptop before
giving it to my daughter? How many times can I install the student
version of Office Ultimate? Does Microsoft keep a count of the number
of times I have installed my copy of Office? If so, does it increment
this count if I de-install it?

Thanks in anticipation.

Bobby

Don't get rid of anything just yet. I am running Office 2003 on two
different machines and I believe it is licensed to be run on a total of 3.
I would certainly imagine you would be OK with Office 2007. I am legal and
did this after OK'ing it with Microsoft. So, save what you have until you
get definitive info from MS, e.g. in form of an MS-MVP if one
answers.....that's as good as Mr. Gates, himself. (They are not officially
connected with MS but they know more about the stuff than MS does :) )

However, I'm almost certain you may run it on any 3 machines concurrently.

Thanks Chet. I agree that there is a limitation of three machines. But
what happens if I remove a copy from one of my laptops? Does the
"count" decrease so that I can install it on another machine? If I
remove a copy from my old laptop and put a new copy on my new laptop
does my "count" stay the same?

The "license" is for "concurrent installations". There is no limit on
"moves" or "consecutive installations".

So, are you saying that there is no limit to the number of times that
I can install my student version of Office Ultimate (2007)? That MS
does not keep count of the number of activations? That installations
and de-installations are not monitored by MS (against my activation
code)?

Hi Bobby,

There isn't an installation counter. There is a check on the number of activations on different machines. There is no 'deactivate'
or uninstall check. If online activation does not work within the limitations/scope of your MS License Terms (MSLT) then you can
use telephone activation to speak to an activation tech to activate (except on trial products).

Having read several answers to this issue on the site and others, I wan
to make sure I understand the answer:

First, there is a limit for the Ultimate Steal product (US or elsewher
acquired) for one use on a laptop and one on a desktop.

I have a question concerning this...what if you don't need to use it o
a desktop and only want to use it one two laptops, is that permitted?

Is so or even if not, if you need to uninstall it to reus
(licensewise) it on a new desktop, how to you get it reactivted so i
will work? I think I understood that the only way to do so is b
contacting MS by phone? If this is true, what number do you contact s
as not to get the run around?

Thanks

Wrong. The EULA says "one PRIMARY device" and one portable. It doesn't
specify what the PRIMARY device is.

If you need to reactivate by phone the number will be displayed on the
screen.

Hi all,

Thanks Gordon for the update. Do you have a copy of that EULA or kno
where I can find it, as MS reps said one laptop and one dekstop?
Personally, I prefer what you said.

As for the reactivation, thanks! I'll uninstall on my desktop and the
reinstall on my second laptop and see what it shows me but I didn'
recall seeing the number when last I tried

This is a copy of what's in my Eula (Office 2007 Standard)

a. Licensed Device. You may install and use one copy of the software on the
licensed device.
b. Portable Device. You may install another copy on a portable device for
use by the single primary user of the licensed device.
