If it won't go in, that often means that its prerequisite update is not
installed.
It can also mean that you have multiple copies of Office visible when the
installer runs. If you have a backup disk or an alternative startup disk,
in times of difficulty, disconnect these before trying to update.
First make sure OS X is fully up-to-date by running Apple Software Update
until it stops offering you updates.
Then start Apple's Disk Utility and choose Repair Permissions on the Startup
Disk.
At the end of that process, shut down the computer, wait for the power to go
off, then start up again. That runs some Unix clean-up scripts that will
not otherwise run. You don't always need this, but it's a good idea when
things are not going well.
Then quit all Microsoft applications and:
Download and apply the following Microsoft updates in the following order:

At least two of those should tell you they are already installed and have
nothing to do. But you must download the files to your hard disk and run
them locally to find that out. When things go pear-shaped, the automatic
Microsoft Update gets confused and cannot handle the variations.
Do another power-off restart, and all should be well.
If not, come back and we'll get serious with it
Cheers
Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel
This update was released in March, and I still cannot get it to install. I am
not savvy at Mac troubleshooting, so I have no idea whether this is a Mac
thing or a Microsoft Office thing. Any information would be helpful!
