The good news is that you are not alone. The bad news is that we have yet to
find a solution. Further down, Ben posted a direct link that might be a
temporary solution but so far nothing else that has been suggested has solved
the problem.

Did you update your windows recently? Did you update before trying to
update your office? The reason I ask is because I updated with the
cumulative patches to SP2 before trying to update office and I'm wondering if
the security updates to windows are preventing the Office installation wizard
from working.

Here's the link Ben provided to the full kb887977 update:

Down the list you will see a thread titled "word 2220 update kb887978
Server..." that will give you some great advice and show you what I did and
what finally worked for me - disable your download accelerator.

Are any error numbers or messages given? Are you running Office Update on an
administrator account? If you're not you should be. If that does not work
select Start · Run, then type "%windir%/Downloaded Program Files" and press
enter. Right-click "Office Update Installation Engine" and select "Remove".
Delete the OfficeUpdate folder located in C:/Program Files. Now try running
Office Update again, you should be prompted to install the new ActiveX
control.
