W

WCoast

A Dell computer with Office 2003 pre-installed.
The security update this Tuesday wants the CD, why?
What is the simple solution?

Contact Dell.

That IS the answer - contact Dell as they are required to supply Software CDs for pre-installed programs.

Geesh! What kind of an answer were you looking for? Pull a CD out of thin air and use that?

I thought the necessary files might already be on the computer, there are
precedents. Requiring the CD for a security update is lame.

Snarking is childish, stop.

"Requiring the CD for a security update is lame"
Yet this requirement pops up and demands the CD - lame or not.

"Snarking is childish, stop"
Yeah, you first, k?

You should have received a CD from Dell as Milly Staples pointed out.
Most Office updates require the CD. You can however try downloading the full updates and
see if they will install without the CD.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt.

Also -
Options for using Office Update
Change the options for ................When installing updates:
Use smaller update files that may require access to my product CD or network
installation location
Use larger update files that should not require access to my product CD or
network installation location
Check use the larger update files ..................................

That's what I have done and I don't get asked for the CD. However there are times
when you will be asked for the CD regardless. So why not get the CD from Dell in case you
need it.
