Office update cannot check for updates

I am trying to run office update such that it can check for the necessary Word updates that I require. It starts running and then stops after 40% and indicates that it cannot continue. It suggests checking the Internet connection that is fine and then indicates that there may have been a problem with Windows Installer and that I should check the directory Window\Installer that does not exist. Note that Windows Update works with no problems!
