Office Update doesn't recognize my IE6 browser

For the past few weeks, when I try to visit OfficeUpdate, it says that I'm
using an unsupported Web browser. This is incorrect, since I'm using WinXP
Pro including, obviously, IE6 - all up-to-date according to Windows Update
today. If I persist, I reach another screen which accuses me of using a
Mac!

After trying several other things, I've now disabled Norton Internet
Security 2004 temporarily. This lets me get past the "gatekeeper" into the
Office Update site. I then enabled NIS and the patches downloaded and
installed, although there were some pauses while it scanned the files.

Does anybody know the proper settings for NIS 2004 so that I don't have to
use this disable/enable workaround?

I have same problem but use an older version of NIS. In
NIS, go to Advanced Options. Create a special entry for
the OU website and under Browser Privacy drop-down,
select 'Allow' instead of 'Block'. This will create an
exception rule for OU, without having to temporarily
disabling NIS.

Hi, Harry.

I tried that. In NIS 2004, I worked my way through Symantec's maze on this
path: I clicked Personal Firewall | Configure | Advanced | General. Then
Add | Permit | Connections To and From Other Computers | Add | and put
office.microsoft.com into the box. Then I checked TCP and UDP, gave the
rule a name and OKed my way out. Next time I visited that site, it again
told me I need to get a supported browser.

So I disabled NIS and got the latest update, then enabled NIS again.

Symantec REALLY needs to work on this! :^{ Or at least tell me (and
everybody else) how to configure their program. And don't make me go
looking for the answer; put it out where it's easy to find.

I'm on travel now, so can't duplicate your steps. But, the problem still
sounds like NIS is enforcing Browser Privacy somewhere. Maybe NIS 2004 menu
is a bit different than the version I'm using. I don't think you need to go
to the level of tweaking TCP & UDP rules. For now, all I can offer is to
scour the NIS settings for something like Browser Privacy and see if you can
turn it off.
