Office Update doesn't work after XP SP2

Eduardo

I, like many others, am not able to run Office Update via
the web after installing XP SP2. I can't repair the
Office XP install either, since it always looks for an
*.msi or *.msp referring to SP2 (nnnnnn.MAINSP2ff.msp) and
that doesn't exist.

I also can't update by hand after downloading the two
recent updates. They crash and I report the error, fin.

HELP!

I called Microsoft and opened a ticket. I was told that it is now a known
issue between XP SP2 and certain Office products such as Office 2000 with
respect to Officeupdate and/or hotfixes for Office.

No ETA was given for a solution.

Thanks for the info! I can sleep easier knowing that MS
at least knows it's a problem (or can I...)

I had this same problem,
Was on with tech support for 1 hr and did alot of
uninstalls reinstalls and etc.
nothing worked. until this and this is the solution.
You have to uninstall office 2003 manually.
Tech support walked me through it since you have to delete
a bunch of registry keys first. then folders then a lot
of stuff.
It works now.
Tech support said that doing a detect and repair or a add
remove programs uninstall does not uninstall all
references to office and that is what has to be done.

I was given an option to get Officeupdate to work or use the hotfixes
directly. Uninstall XP SR2, do the officeupdates, re-install XP SP2. I said,
no thanks - I'll wait until the problem is fixed.

I was also told to check Windows Update every couple of days.

Make sure the DCOM Server Process Launcher Service is set to Automatic.
On my SP2 installations, starting this service manually is impossible;
setting to Automatic and rebooting works. This apparently is required
to start the Widows Installer Service or some of its parts correctly.
This works on my installations to permit installation of the Office XP
updates and installation of other apps using InstallShield for which the
Windows Installer is used.

On my system, it is already set to Automatic. As MS has confirmed to me, XP
SP2 has introduced a new bug.

Is Windows Installer likewise running? I've chased this down for
several days after finding that Installshield would fail to install on
my SP2 as well as Office Update failing. I updated the Installshield
drivers and then found that the DCOM service and Windows Installer
service were part of this separate problem. After taking care of the
Installshield/DCOM/Windows Installer, Office Update worked just fine.

There is a separate SP2 COM security issue with Installshield that might
also affect Office Update, since I had to make this change first for the
Installshield problem. Open the Console/Component Services/Computers.
Right click My Computer, select COM Security/Access Permissions/Edit
Default. Select your username. If it is not there, Add it, the set Local
and Remote Access to Allow. My username was missing, Self does not seem
to work in its place.

This morning I re-downloaded the hotfixes for Office XP and they magically
installed easily.

However I still had the problem with officeupdate and my Office 2000
products. However it finally worked. This is what I did.

I searched for the file opuc.dll and deleted it and also removed the office
update engine. Then I tried officeupdate again. It took long but eventually
completed. It stayed at 40% for 20 minutes and after the download of the
necessary files, the installation progress meter stayed at halfway for at
least another 20 minutes. The hard drive was accessed every minute or so.

Perhaps the speed is slowed down because of the extra security checks that
XP SP2 has placed on my computer. It appeared to be running as a background
job.
